About Hockey

Skater Hockey is played with either a ball or puck, and teams can consist of a maximum of 16 outfield players and 2 goalkeepers per game with a minimum of 4 outfield players and 1 goalkeeper. The game itself is played with 4 outfield players and one goalkeeper with unlimited substitutions throughout. Referee's award penalties ranging from 2 minutes (minor) to a red card (match penalty) if illegal play occurs. Skater Hockey is open to all ages and is a mixed sex sport. Players fall into different categories according to their age, (see Age Groups below). Great Britain is divided into various regions that run a league for all age groups and some host inter-regional domestic tournaments. All regions have their own regional teams in all age groups made up from the best of the best and these teams are out to test in regional tournaments. The country also boasts Great Britain squads in Senior Men, Women and Junior age groups (Youth and Pee Wee are planned for the future). The GB Senior Men have been European Champions in 1997. National Championships are run every year and are a major event in Britain. The top teams from each league qualify for the biggest and most prestigious tournament across the country. National Championships are held at all levels with the winners and runners up qualifying for top European tournaments. Skater hockey is not for the feint hearted! Some of the big (legal) checks can bring a tear to the eyes of even the beefiest players but they still go back for more. Goalkeepers get pounded with slap shots (which can travel at 100 mph) time after time and still go back for more. Spectators lose their voices, get unlucky knocks from high flying balls and travel relentlessly around the country and abroad to support the teams and they still come back for more. BiSHA currently has around 10,000+ members (not including spectators) and the amount of new members expected for next years will add to the ever growing family of skater hockey fanatics!
